Add comments to a Jekyll site

Put the container and the script in an include, then add it to the layout your posts use. It works on GitHub Pages: there's nothing to build or install.

Before you start

  • A Disfora project for your site. Create a free account, start a project and enter your domain. You'll verify it once the code is live.

1. Create an include

_includes/disfora.html
<div data-disfora-comments></div>
<script src="https://disfora.com/public/disfora.js" async></script>

2. Add it to your post layout

Open _layouts/post.html and add the include after {{ content }}:

_layouts/post.html
{{ content }}

{% unless page.comments == false %}
  {% include disfora.html %}
{% endunless %}

A post with comments: false in its front matter skips the comments.

Minima and other gem themes

If your site uses a theme gem, such as Minima, the default for new Jekyll sites, _layouts/post.html isn't in your folder. Find the theme's copy and copy it into your site:

bundle info --path minima

Copy _layouts/post.html from that folder into your site's _layouts/ folder. Jekyll uses your copy instead of the theme's. Minima's layout has this Disqus block; replace it with the include from step 2:

_layouts/post.html
{%- if site.disqus.shortname -%}
  {%- include disqus_comments.html -%}
{%- endif -%}

Then remove disqus.shortname from _config.yml. To bring your old comments across, import your Disqus export first.

Check it on your site

Disfora only loads on the domain in your project, so jekyll serve won't show it. Deploy, then verify your domain if you haven't yet, and open a post on your live site.
